KENYANS ON TWITTER (#KOT) DEFEND LADY COP WITH A TIGHT UP SKIRT

Sikana Andew Sumbwa wrote on facebook: A female traffic police corporal in Kiambu county now fears she will be transferred to a distant outpost following the furore surrounding her official uniform.

Corporal Linda Okello was published on Sunday Nation newspaper wearing a tight skirt while
on official duty at the KCB Kenya national rally championship in Kiambu.

Speaking exclusively to Nairobi News, Corporal Okello recounted how she was summoned by Kiambu County Commandant James Mugeria on Monday morning and told to give an explanation why her official skirt was tight.

She was also instructed to carry along the skirt for verification on whether it was the official police uniform she was issued.

Throughout the questioning, Corporal Okello insisted that the skirt was her official uniform and that she had gained weight since it was issued.

County Commandant James Mugeria gave her back the skirt after the grilling.

The policewoman now fears she will be transferred to a distant hardship area.

Nairobians started a Twitter campaign to protest against the alleged disciplinary action.

Dubbed #KenyansforLindaOkello and#PoliceUniform, the campaign condemned Corporal Okello’s ‘victimisation’.

Robert Alai tweeted ‘@UKenyatta @IGKimaiyo @JoeLenku Since when the photo appeared on our newspapers, the female police officer has not had peace #PoliceUniform’

WHAT I WORE TO MR & MISS DAYSTAR UNIVERSITY 2014 DINNER PARTY

#WHAT I WORE

Let us be honest. Daystar has beautiful ladies who know how to dress fashion trends. But last Friday at Pride Inn Hotel Westlands, for the Mr. and Miss Daystar/ SOEA event, it was great to see the new crop of gentlemen taking their image as serious. Cleanliness is attractive. It must be.
Your outfit can tell whether you are actually a true expression of a confident dresser or not. Well, I am! I try to do new stuff with my old clothes every day.

For my hair, I went for the 90’s punk -Will Smith in Fresh Prince of Belair look-well hairstyle is important and so I tend to go for a style that complements my look.
I did a tailor-made blue suit. One thing with suits and tall people is- go for a well-fitting suit and make sure you comfortable. Don’t be afraid of colors- in fact coloured suits are the in-thing now.
I did a Nigeria headgear and one that matched my geek shades. For my bow-tie, a present from my friend, Kiki- an Ankara hand-made bow tie made it and that complemented my red and black shoes.
I did a  white shirt since it is neutral and can match anything. And of course, Vaseline and a god cologne for the night was another trick up my sleeves.

MR & MISS DAYSTAR UNIVERSITY FAILS TO LIVE UP TO ITS BILLING

#SPOTLIGHT

The same words I echoed earlier, on Friday 25th April 2014, came to haunt the event’s organizers of the Mr. and Miss Daystar University-Nairobi Campus. I wrote in part “…Sure, the Edward Wanyoike’s social welfare and events committee dockets could use some lively strategies to heighten up the event and hype it, but we will take the poor strategies. Although there is need to keep the event lively and moving forward, or else, many comrades will pull away and fail to support the event as we have seen this semester with many calendar events. But that would be asking for too much for a show that is just two year old. So, to Edward and team, you have everyone’s attention- and you can only fail if you want to!”

That is exactly what happened! The event flopped! But allow me to focus on the positive as any positive minded writer would.
It was to say the least a pretty tough contest, and ‘pretty” is the word as 12 contestants lined up for the esteemed Mr. and Miss Daystar University/ SOEA event at the jam-packed Pride Inn Restaurant in Westlands, Nairobi.
The well-dressed crowd made sure the paparazzi would have a hard time. The ladies dressed to kill and the guys brought their A-GAME-dressing on-point!  The dinner was great although was cold after it was served late.

For an event that was to start at 6pm, and cruise till midnight, the event organizers had to delay till past 10pm to start and end around the wee hours of the morning.
Outside, the crowd kept coming. There was hardly any space left at the parking lot. Inside, Citizen’s Johnson Mwakazi kept charging the crowd before handing the mic to System Unit’s MC-Njugush alongside DJ Moh on the decks.

Hosted by One FM’S evening drive host: MC Chito and Daystar student, Nyawira, here the party was not all about the deejay mixes. The crowd spread over the dinner tables sharing drinks and bonding as they took selfies.
There was hardly any space inside and as the crowd seemed not into the hype, many decided to leave and hit the Westlands’ party scenes.
The unexpected shocker of the night was a cameo appearance and performance by Prezzo. He made a good statement of himself with a starling performance- charging the crowd as they sang along to his popular “mafans” and “come let’s get down” tunes.

However, the crowning went to Schumi and Dmitri who were awarded Miss and Mr. Daystar respectively. The vent had its highs and lows, but, besides; the morning had come and the exhausted crowd fizzled, everyone off to their sweet aboard.

An Epic Start for Ryan Giggs

#END OF AN ERROR

Once, a famous tweet by President Uhuru Kenyatta in his twitter handle jokingly teased, “who am I to sack Ole lemku if Man United has not sacked David Moyes?” now I do not know the import of Moyes’ sacking and Ole Lenku prospects. Perhaps, the security CS needs to consult the fortune-tellers. Thankfully they no longer get the sack over 1pm news bulletin; but that is a story for another day.
So this past week, less than 360 minutes from the end of the season, a trophy less season and what’s more, a season Manchester United will finish with the lowest premier league points tally ever, David Moyes was sacked just after one season as manager.

All eyes this past weekend turned to the Old Trafford dug-out as Man-U began lie after David Moyes. Ryan Giggs assisted by three fellow members of united famed “class of 92”; took temporary charge of the troubled giants and led them to beat struggling Norwich 4-0.
At the Old Trafford, banners read boldly, “in Giggs we trust” as he made his way in a suit to seat at the former coach Ferguson’s seat at the dugout. He had time to smile and sign autographs for fans close to the dug-out. The 40-year old, surrounded by other gilded graduates of United’s youth academy, with Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, all helping their old colleague, those familiar faces inspired a win over Norwich and put smiles back on many faces.

With united starting the post Moyes ear, eyes turned to Anfield where Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who carried out his threat to field a weakened team that beat the Reds 2-0. Liverpool’s red-hot from after reeling off 11 successive league wins, came to an abrupt end on Sunday.
But good news is that Luis Suarez, scorer of 30 league goals this season, after the defeat was declared the Season’s Player of the year.
With Liverpool’s defeat, now eyes turn to Manchester City and Chelsea who still remain favorites in the title race!

URGENT CALL TO STOP ENCROACHMENT AT CITY PARK (dated 28 April 2014)

PRESS RELEASE

URGENT CALL TO STOP ENCROACHMENT AT CITY PARK (dated 28 April 2014)
The Friends of City Park wish to express outrage and     concern about the ongoing encroachment at the City Park of Nairobi,  a public green space gazetted as a National Monument in 2009, under the  National Museums and Heritage Act (Cap. 216 Laws of Kenya). The encroachment entails the clearing of bush in a substantial area, on the North side of the Park, behind the War Veterans Cemetery and adjacent to the   Joseph Murumbi Memorial.
The matter was first reported by the Friends of City Park to the Nairobi City County Government in the last week of March 2014. With great concern, we note that a month later the encroachment activities continue.
This is a gross violation of a Park which is a jewel in Nairobi’s crown of public spaces. It is unique in encapsulating the type of natural forest that, until a hundred years ago, covered most of Nairobi. As such it can be considered a ‘living museum’. Wanton destruction of this habitat is destroying important biodiversity which in some cases is unique to the City Park and making the site unusable by the public.
As concerned residents, we are calling for a stop of this impunity being visited on public land and urging the Nairobi City County Government and other responsible Government agencies to stop this illegal activity at City Park, by what we believe is a private party.
We would also like the media to make the general public, aware of these developments.
END
The public enjoying an event at City Park . Let’s work together to keep the Park green and open to the public.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Firstly, what is City Park?
• City Park is both a public park and a protected area under the National Museums and Heritage Act.
• It is Nairobi's oldest park, entrusted in 1932 to the local authority governing Nairobi at the time, for the recreation of "the town's future citizens".
• It is located between Forest Rd and Limuru Rd, in the Nairobi area of Parklands.

Why it matters?
• It is more than 60 hectares of green space, that incorporate botanic gardens and an evergreen forest remnant.
• With so little green space per person in the city, it is used by communities from as far as Kibera, Embakasi, Karasani as well as those that border the park.
• We've identified more than 1000 species of plants and animals at City Park, making it a biodiversity hotspot in the city.
• The park is one of the few lungs of the city, helping to absorb carbon produced from all the activity in the city.
• City Park also has a rich cultural legacy – The freedom fighter and human-rights activist, Pio Gama Pinto, is buried here, as is Kenya's second Vice-President, Joseph Murumbi (a Murumbi Memorial Garden has been established). There are also several historical sites in the park, including the Catholic, Anglican, Jewish and World War I and World War II veterans’ cemeteries.

The Land and Monument?
• 60 hectares were gazetted as a National Monument by the National Museums of Kenya in 2009 (No. 59 of 4th September 2009 - Legislative Supplement No. 35). The gazetted area includes the band-stand, forest, gardens, nurseries, Bowling Green, Murumbi memorial, cemeteries.
•  The Friends first brought the land issues to the fore at the end of 1996. With regard to the details of the land, and who grabbed it, the National Land Commission would be in the best position to give details of the current situation. Indeed the NLC published a list of land parcels in the national print media on 10th Jul 2013 with the view that they were obtained and granted in an illegal and/or irregular manner (Daily Nation pg.45).

Actions of the Friends of City Park (Friends)
• The Friends is a volunteer group established in 1996 by Nature Kenya (the East Africa Natural History Society).
• Through community organizing, newspaper and media reporting, the Friends initiated and sustained strong public presence with respect to the conservation and protection of City Park.  Newspapers archives will provide a useful historical record of the land issues as they unfolded over the years.
• The Friends worked closely with the National Museums in realizing the gazettement of City Park. The Friends also worked with Museum scientists in completing a biodiversity survey, and published the first ever guidebook for City Park.
•      The Friends have engaged with the National Land Commission on the issue of the contents of the 10 Jul 2013 notice.
•  The Friends encourage use, education, research, and conservation of the park with activities like guided walks (which are open and free to the public), clean-up events, gardening events, corporate and school activities.
