SEPETUKA 2013: THE REVIEW

Arguably one of Kenya’s most anticipated events this year, Sepetuka went down on November 30th at the Carnivore grounds. This year, the event was primarily a DJ festival, featuring the world’s best in their respective genres, top spin-masters from around the world  including: DJ Robbo Ranks (U.K., dancehall), ZJ Chrome (Jamaica, reggae and dancehall), Silver Star DJs (Jamaica, reggae and dancehall), DJ Semtex (U.K., hip hop), Heavy K (South Africa, kwaito and Afro-House), DJ Seani Bee (aka the Remix Kid and U.K., dubstep, hip hop and dancehall).

The DJs converged in Nairobi’s with one mission: to entertain. They hit the mammoth crowd with hit after hit from their masterfully done sets, and some superb wizardry on the decks. Did you know DJ Semtex could mix with only one hand?

The event also featured the best DJ’s the +254 had to offer, including the Homeboyz DJs, Hassan, Vin and Jack Rooster. DJ Styles, DJ Crème de la Crème, DJ Hypnotic, DJ Kaydee, the Electrique DJs,6am DJs, and the sassy DJ Pierra Makena also performed in addition to famed radio personality and DJ, G Money.

There was a bit of everything for everyone, from rap, hip hop and Afro house, kwaito, R&B and dancehall.
Lyrically gifted and versatile rapper, Rabbit, performed his smash hits to a very appreciative crowd. Muthoni the Drummer Queen and rising urban-soul stars Fena, Sage and sexy songstress Habida were also part of the line up. The event did live up to all the hype that it had built up over the last few weeks, with event organizers pulling all the stops to make sure it was a success. The lighting was unlike any other across the three massive stages with adequate security all round.

Sepetuka has been a journey, growing in leaps and bounds all the way from the first edition in 2008, as a college party, to a massive music festival featuring artistes and top entertainers from all over the world. Sepetuka 5 was definitely the best one yet, and it can only get better. We certainly cannot wait for next year!
