#TGIFF- THANK GOD IT’S FASHION FRIDAY…
“Many
parents have little or no concern for their baby’s image, as long as they are
dressed warmly,” something 25 year old, Silvia Njoki, can confidently utter.
The fashion stylist and writer’s gorgeous five-month-old baby girl, Nielsine,
dresses to impress. She even has a super cute Ankara ensemble, consisting of a
dress and a matching head band. “[It was made] in just a few hours! I have my
own head scarf matching her outfit—it’s magical,” beams Silvia. She studied
Fashion Styling at Central St. Martins, London and Milan’s Nuova Accademia di
Belle Arti. Most of her baby’s wardrobe is
hand made and unique, making many mums, and wannabe-mums, green with envy over
the mother-daughter’s stylish clothes. “I get several requests to supply
similar sets – primarily in Ankara fabrics. Beautiful and stylish outfits do
come at a price and being in Kenya can sometimes be hard to access some
designs, ” the designer shares. Silvia’s style is influenced by various trends,
fashion blogs, personalities and colors; and that of her adorable baby—“The
same standards until she is old enough to realize her own style,” states
Silvia. Babies will always burp/throw up, messing their outfits. So what’s the
secret to fashionably dressing a baby in clothes that will last? “Try matching
fitting funky designed bibs with dresses. On normal days; stick to the basic
clothes with fasteners for easy access while changing diapers. For special
occasions; go for more fancy pieces,” she advises.“Watch out for loose buttons,
pieces and beads; they can choke a baby!” cautions Silvia who emphasizes that
comfort must be the overriding priority.
Silvia’s craft started out when
she purchased a sewing machine. While making her own outfits, she thought to
herself, “I could try my hand on a little something for my baby girl”, not
knowing how delightful her now-famous little outfits, which can be viewed via
her DIY blog, would turn out to be. “Go for natural fabrics. Own fewer but well
fitting baby clothes to avoid a mini fight at dress time. For socks, shoes,
bibs and head-bands; have fun with colors, prints and designs,” she recommends.
Her blog: www.silvianjoki.com is
devoted to easy-to-emulate DIY fashion crafts.
