RIC HENRY LIDELL was immortalized in the
Oscar Award Winning movie “Chariots Of Fire”. During the 1924 Paris Olympics, committed Christian Eric Liddell
refused to race on Sunday and was forced to withdraw from the 100 meters, his
best event.
Instead, Liddell, a Scottish, raced in the
400 meters and little was expected of him of course. As Liddell went on the
starting blocks for the race, an American masseur sipped a piece of paper in
his hand with the quotation from 1st Samuel 2:30; “those who honor me I will
honor.” Liddell ran with that piece of paper in his hand and not only won the
race, but broke the existing world record with a time of 47.6 seconds.
-
he was nicknamed “ the flying Scotsman”
-
His performance in the 400 meters in Paris stood as a European
record for 12 years.
