WESTGATE MALL TERROR: THE AFTERMATH

In one of the most daring act of public execution, gun trotting criminals struck at Westgate Mall; Nairobi’s most lavish shopping ,all and arbitrarily shot at shoppers before holding others hostage for hours.
Driving  the following through Westland’s, parklands and later into the city center; I got pictures of places that seemed to be on a normal mode; while other areas were still coming to terms with the terror’s aftermath.

Despite our differences; I saw concerned Kenyans as Kencom House donating blood despite the long queues. And like the president said; “we shall win the evil works of the devil through our actual deeds of love!”

NAIROBI STREET FASHION: - THE VINTAGE IS BACK!!!

Do you fancy street funk or street fad; or street fashion? Well, I do! I am a keen observer of youth trends and also a youth culture enthusiast.

The trending street fashion theme right now in Nairobi is the 90’s look. The old vintage circle shades; vintage hair-cuts (talking about the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s Will Smith or the Jamaican dancehall crooner Shabba Ranks) and just vintage clothes.
I think the hit tune by Major Lazor and Busy Signal- :”BUMAYE”, has inspired many young guys to go back to the 90’s and get armed with their favorite bold colored vintage and street fads and attires.

Well; I have not been left behind either. Here are some of my Kodak vintage moments…

URBAN GOURMET BURGER

BY JEANETTE MUSEMBI

As
a food lover; I love seeing new culinary trend take hold, inspiring new eateries and causing older establishments to up their game.  So I was wondering if you had noticed the current fad that is taking Nairobi by storm: gourmet burgers.

Fast food used to mean a slightly dodgy kebab; a burger shop or a bucket of crisped-to –death chicken. Now the creeping gentrification of the snack is going mainstream after winning us over at festivals and urban pop-ups. Gourmet burgers are in, as fast food turns into to-quality cuisine.
Diners looking for a burger that is a cut above the preservative- laden stereotype have been making some outlets so popular that it’s not uncommon to see overbooked reservations at the weekends.

Burgers featured in today’s menu are topped with delights such as beacon and blue cheese dressing; pineapple and chilies, and goat’s cheese with tomato. Of course, the secret to all gourmet cooking is using fresh ingredients.

When the hunger pangs comes calling, there’s little to beat a bf, succulent burger. Located in Nairobi’s Westgate Mall; Urban Burger has earned a great reputation for its burgers made from selected meat cuts with a low fat content, no preservatives; low-GI buns and everything fresh.
