ETANA REPLIES EXCLUSIVELY TO AFRICA’S HANGOUT BLOG ON WHAT REALLY WENT DOWN AT THE BIG TUNES FESTIVAL CONCERT IN NAIROBI KENYA AND HOW THE KENYAN MEDIA PITED A BAD BLOOD BETWEEN HER AND SINGER TARRUS RILEY.

After going to press yesterday on how apologetic (http://bukhungu-bukhanga.blogspot.com/2012/08/an-open-apology-letter-to-jamaicas.html) we were after what Reggae songstress Etana had to endure under the hands of unscrupulous Kenyan promoters, we emailed her the apology letter and even re posted it on her facebook page and on my personal facebook profile. I am humbled to write today that I received a reply from her setting the record straight. I leave you to judge after reading the reply.

Love and respect and thanks for taking the time out to express yourself the way u did. I really do love Kenya and I know ill be back there in the right way. With the right people on the business end.

Blessed love,

Please forwarded message below. All artistes should be warned about Big Tunes Touring Company who were the promoters of the show.Etana's being pregnant has nothing to do with any of the situation. We all went there knowing she's fully capable of performing and expected to be treated no different from the performing artist she is and we expected our contract with the promoter to be honored. Pregnancy does not mean crippled.

Hello;

Thanks for your apology but the reason for not doing a press conference together is because we were still waiting on transactions to be done by the promoter, things that were not confirmed.

Even after this with their promises to fix everything both Tarrus and I, in the company of our managers went to the radio station because we wanted to let Kenya know we were there though the business side was still not complete.

For every event, every artist should have their own vehicle and their own dressing room for privacy not because there was a riff. I'm female, he's male, what if I had to chamge an undergarment? Do I do this in front of everyone? Every artist do things differently and for this reason and by my contract and probably even his, we should have my own dressing room.

Tarrus and I go way back even before the world knew my name was Etana. There is no riff between us and I doubt there ever will be. Business is business and even if we are friends when its time for business every artist need to do what they need to do to have the best show possible.

I had to wait in the car because both managers were waiting on their balance of outstanding monies from the promoter. I was told by my manager to wait until Tarrus's manager got what she wanted and my manager got what he wanted before going on stage. If there was a Riff the two managers would not work together. NANA and the person who owns the venue made sure all monies were paid and she was not a part of the production team. She did this on behalf of Kenyan people and for that I'm grateful.

Rumors rumors, smh smart of you to come directly to us to find out what really happened. That's what they should have done instead of writing something they don't know about. I'm sure the respect and love is mutual between tarrus and myself nothing has changed.

Regards,

video; Pentecostal Church Wedding Drama

There was commotion and drama at a pastor’s wedding at the Nairobi Pentecostal church when three women and a man sought to stop the ceremony. The complainants, accompanied by two children stormed the church to stop the wedding venue. After a closed-door meeting the presiding pastor decided to go ahead with the ceremony as the complainants were escorted out of the church

Midfielder Muamba quits football

Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba has announced he has retired from all forms of professional football.
Muamba, 24, collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest on 17 March during Bolton's FA Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspur.
"While the news is devastating, I have much to be thankful for," said Muamba.
"I thank God that I am alive and I pay tribute once again to the members of the medical team who never gave up on me."
His retirement comes from the recommendation of his medical team, following extensive consultations with leading cardiologists both in the United Kingdom and Europe.
Muamba had travelled to Belgium earlier in the week to undergo minor heart surgery, which was said to have been routine and have no bearing on whether the player would return to action.
The news comes just six months after he suffered the cardiac arrest with doctors saying he was "in effect dead" for 78 minutes.
He was given 15 defibrillator shocks before his heart started beating again and he spent around four weeks in intensive care.
"Since suffering my heart attack and being discharged from hospital, I have remained utterly positive in the belief I could one day resume my playing career and play for Bolton Wanderers once again," said Muamba in a statement.
"As part of my on-going recovery, last week I travelled to Belgium to seek further medical advice from a leading cardiologist.
"But the news I received was obviously not what I had hoped it would be and it means I am now announcing my retirement from professional football."
Muamba began his career at Arsenal and moved to Birmingham City, before playing for Bolton Wanderers for four years.
"Football has been my life since I was a teenage boy and it has given me so many opportunities," he said.
"Above all else, I love the game and count myself very lucky to have been able to play at the highest level."

How Pilot’s knowledge of mountain terrain aided rescue operation

Ben Simpson, the pilot who located and rescued Ugandan troops aboard ill-fated helicopter on Mt Kenya. (Photo:George Mulala/Standard)http://www.standardmedia.co.keFor Ben Simpson, his 17 years flying experience in helicopters came in handy in the rescue operation of seven Ugandan military officers in Mt Kenya forest.
Simpson, 38, put to use his vast knowledge of the Mt Kenya terrain to locate and evacuate the soldiers who had spent their night in the wildlife infested forest.

We caught up with the pilot, who is Director of Helicopter Operations at Tropic Air, at the Tropic Air Airstrip in Nanyuki just some minutes past six when he had rescued the last batch of the soldiers.
The well-built man could only spare some minutes for an interview before he boarded his chopper for Nairobi before nightfall.
He recounted the challenges he experienced in the daylong operation together with personnel from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
Having participated in other rescue operations before, Simpson said his knowledge of the area was crucial in the whole operation.
17 years experience
“I have 17 years flying operations and since I operate from Nanyuki, it was easy to manoeuver the place,” said Simpson simply dressed in a faded blue T-shirt and blue jeans.
His clothes were drenched, a clear indicator of the tribulations the team underwent in the rescue efforts.
Simpson said he had taken a news crew from a foreign media house to the mountain after news of the crash filtered in.
“Once we were at the forest, the Kenyan Air Force gave us the co-ordinates of the scene where the chopper had crashed. It took me about 30 minutes to locate it,” he said

Simpson says he spotted the badly damaged helicopter perched on trees and six of the occupants walking around it.
“From the air, we could see the soldiers walking around the wreckage while one of them was seated. I managed to land about 200 metres from the scene,” he said.
He said that after spotting the helicopter at 11.30 am; it took him and the KWS crew nearly an hour to get to it due to the steep topography.
“The scene was on a slope and it was difficult for us to get there. When we found them, one of them — the pilot — was in great pain,” said Simpson.
“The chopper crashed in the southern part of Mt Kenya and all the seven people on board are alive but the captain has serious back injuries,” Simpson told The Standard at the Nanyuki airstrip.
Damaged body
He added: “The chopper’s body is badly damaged but the engine is intact. The propellers shafts are gone.”
The soldiers too spotted and started beckoning him.

“Immediately they spotted my helicopter they beckoned me to come to their rescue,” said Simpson.
According to the initial exchanges with the soldiers, he gathered that they ran into bad weather.
“I managed to get the first four who had no physical injuries. They told me they crashed in bad weather and that the captain had a bad back injury,” said the pilot before he took off to rescue the remaining three.
Al-Jazeera correspondent Peter Gretse who was in the chopper that spotted the wreckage described how the scene was littered with personal belongings.
“I talked to the pilot who said he was trying to escape bad weather when the accident occurred. The scene was a mess and it is a miraculous escape for the troops,” said Gretse.
“They are lucky to be alive, since the helicopter is badly damaged. The weather was terrible that the soldiers lit a fire in the forest to keep themselves warm,” said the reporter.

Arudo15 August 2012 4:09 AMCannot believe the scanty information we are getting from the both governments who are charged with the responsibility of updating the public on what the actual situation is. The Standard's way of reporting the accident is simple and reveals a lot. Bravo for the needed coverage.

Museveni awards athlete Ksh6.7M for winning Olympic gold

Crowds in Uganda have given a hero's welcome to Stephen Kiprotich, the country's first Olympic gold medal winner in 40 years.
Kiprotich, a prison warden who won the men's marathon on Sunday, was then presented with a a cheque for $80,000 (Ksh 6.7 M) by President Yoweri Museveni.
He was also promoted nine ranks to become an assistant superintendent in the prisons service.
Mr Museveni promised that more would be done to invest in athletes in future.
Convoy blocked
The BBC's Catherine Byaruhanga in Entebbe says people lined the street as Kiprotich waved from an open-top car with the personalised number plate "UG GOLD".
At one stage the convoy was forced to stop by the crowds blocking the road on the way to State House, where Kiprotich had breakfast with the president, she says.
After Kiprotich was presented with the cheque, he asked the president if he would build a house for his parents in north-eastern Kapchorwa district.
Mr Museveni agreed that a three-bedroom would be constructed.
The president also admitted that funding in sports had suffered as the country had concentrated on development projects such as building schools and roads.
But he promised that in future all athletes who won international medals would receive a 1m Ugandan shilling ($400,000) monthly stipend to help them train.
A high-altitude training school would also be built, he promised.
Correspondents say the reaction in Uganda to Kiprotich's victory has been euphoric
The state-owned Vision media group set up a fund to raise prize money for the runner after he won on Sunday - and in three hours raised more than $100,000 - it aims to make it to $500,000.
Uganda's last Olympic champion was 400m hurdler John Akii-Bua, who won gold at Munich in 1972.

AN OPEN APOLOGY LETTER TO JAMAICA’S REGGAE SENSATION, ETANA…

Dear Etana “The Strong One,”

Happy 50 Th anniversary to you and fellow Jamaicans worldwide. I know you will be shocked to read this letter from a Kenyan fan (to be honest I am sure you will not read it because you are back on the road touring and performing). I am sure Kenyan promoters are the last people you’d want to hear from right now, let alone see them or strike a conversation. Kindly be patient as you read this.
I read on the papers, tabloids and over the internet on how Dean Fraser, Etana, Tarrus Riley and the Black Soil band left their Kenyan fans yearning for more.
How I wish I would have attended the event. But because of some issues involving respecting my folks since I am under their roof, I could not make it to the Carnivore Grounds.
I remember the first time I heard a song from you was through the Silverstar Sounds radio show hosted by Randy and Gussy every Friday night on Homeboyz Radio over here in Kenya. I remember Gussy joking on how you were her boo and he was gonna marry you. I remember your angelic voice on the “I am not afraid” tune on the Rub-a-Dub Riddim. My first impression was “who ya dis?”

From then on, I went on a journey to find out more about Etana and each time I came across tunes you have belted out like “August Town”- a song that is a story of how a group of families from your August Town, your Hometown were shot by police after someone alleged that there were thugs down the river bed yet they had just set up a sound system and were partying. Tunes like “Blessing” with Albarosie have been a great listen to your latest “wifey” tune on the Heart and Soul Riddim. I have been blessed and inspired by your conscious tunes Etana.
Even as I read the good stuff about your electrifying performance right here in Nairobi, I also read about the painful stuffs you had to undergo together with your hubby despite being pregnant. The tussle pitting your representative and the promoters.
Infact, in one of Kenya’s most read newspaper- The Standard, a pull out on the Eve gal/The Dude magazine, an entry on Wednesday August 15th,2012 reads…
TOUGH SURVIVAL FOR FEMALE REGGAE ARTISTES:
L
ike in several other professions, in the music industry and especially reggae, a female artiste has to work twice as hard as a male artiste. This is according to visiting reggae songstress Etana. On Friday, before the Big Tunes Festival concert, Etana tweeted:
“So my representative had hell dealing with this Kenya promoter as far as I am hearing I may not be able to perform. Though I’m here. Crazy… wah dis mi come buck up plan inna Kenya. Ever feel like your hands are tied? Women always have to fight extra hard.”
Although she did not mention names, it was sort of clear she was referring to the other visiting artiste Tarrus Riley being more of a star attraction than she was.
We learnt that the two were having serious friction, to a point of not being able to be in the same room.
A joint press conference for the two could not take place on Friday at the Sankara Hotel, and the media had to be addressed by Tarrus first and then separately by Etana after Tarrus went back to his hotel room.
On the day of the concert, as there was only one room back stage for the star artistes to wait in, Etana, accompanied by her husband-cum-manager, decided to go back to the car and wait for her performing moment as opposed to waiting in the room together with Tarrus and his team.
I have no idea whether all of what is written above is plain gossip or not. And for that reason I choose not to argue without the facts, but I take this humble opportunity openly to ask for forgiveness from you on behalf of my fellow country men and lovers of your music and reggae genre. At times, we get too- high headed in pride to stoop below and accept we are wrong and in need of forgiveness.
Kindly find it in you heart to forgive us as a whole! In that deep love for you Kenyan fans, include me. All the best in your endeavours and as you carry the little one growing in your tummy. Xoxoxo!!!!
Your fan,
Vincent libosso
