P-UNIT MAKES EAST AFRICA PROUD AT CHANNEL O AWARDS (CHOAMVA)

The Channel O Africa Music Video Awards (CHOMVA) went down last weekend, (Saturday 30th November) at the Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto hosted by Nigeria’s Naeto C and AKA. The awards ceremony was the culmination of an ongoing project by music fans all over Africa. Fans voted for their favorite artistes across different categories. Kenya’s highlight this year was the double win by Kenyan group P-Unit feat. Collo with the Musyoka-produced hit, ‘You Guy (Dat Dendai). The song won in the Most Gifted African East Video  and Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall Video categories.(Watch video here).

The win was a huge relief for East African music as a whole as other nominees including Kenyans: Sauti Sol, STL, Victoria Kimani and Xtatic did not get any award. This year’s CHOAMVA was largely dominated by West & Southern African artistes. Only Victoria Kimani from Kenya performed her song “Mtoto” in the list of performers that included Cassper Nyovest featuring Okmalumkooklat, Burna Boy, The Soil, Khuli Chana, Buffalo Souljah, Wizkid, Aka featuring Da L.E.S., KCee, Lizha James and Mafikizolo

The biggest category at the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards is always the Most Gifted Video of the Year which this year featured a massive 12 nominees. In the end it was Wizkid who triumphed with “Azonto”, marking yet another big moment in the career of the Nigerian star.

THROUGH THE LENS OF NAIROBI’S PHOTOGRAPHERS- GEORGINA GOODWIN

#PHOTOGRAPHY MONTH WITH @UP Magazine/ #WeLoveNairobi
Georgina Goodwin (Photojournalism)
Georgina has no qualms about picking the camera and plunging in the thick of things; from skirmishes in the city to documentaries in the remotest African heartlands. “I have always loved taking photographs and started feeling the need to consistently take images when I sailed the Indian Ocean in 2003-2004,” says the freelancer of her beginnings. Passion soon grew to accolades when she bagged two awards at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year in Kenya (2005).
From then on she took photography seriously enough to immortalize critical moments of recent Kenyan history: the 2007/8 Post Election Violence; the Occupy Parliament demonstrations; and most recently, the Westgate Attack in 2013. She’s currently immersed in a project with a UK Charity, Emerging Leaders, on rape at Mugumoini slum village at the fringes of Kibera in Southlands, Langata. The project aims to impart life skills training on disadvantaged communities withno aid and little government support. “I never stop striving every time I press the shutter to find ways to make it different; finding the angles, the light, and the emotional element that will make it even just a little different,” she emphasizes. “I’m always striving to take award-winning images.”
