CNN- Kenyans Mboya, Nyaga win CNN MultiChoice African Journalist award

The finalists of the CNN African Journalist Awards 2012 gather on stage.

Kenya's Citizen TV gets several honors on the night when journalists Tom Mboya (right) and Evanson Nyaga (left) win both the Television Features Award and are the overall winners of the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards 2012 for their work called "African tribe in India."

South Africa's Joy Summers won the Coca-Cola Company Economics & Business Award for her piece, 'Central Rand Gold.'

(Right to left) Demelza Bush, Craig McKune and Verashni Pillay are jointly-awarded the Digital Journalism Award.

Saturday vision's journalist, Gerald Tenywa wins the Environment Award for his piece, "Concrete graves threaten environment."

The Francophone General News Award is awarded to Egyptian journalist Manar Attiya.

The Electronic Media Award (television) went to Najlae Benmbarek from Morocco.

Photojournalist for The Star in South Africa, Antoine de Ras wins the Photographic Award for his pieces, "Pulse of the People", "Egypt Uprising" and "Mogadishu madness."

Kenyan journalist John Muchangi Njiru's piece, "Inside the life of Nairobi male sex workers" won him the award for HIV/AIDS Reporting Award.

The Portuguese Language General News Award -- Print goes to journalist Isabel João from Angola.

Arsénio Henriques wins the Portuguese Language General News Award -- Television.

    African gov't hands are tied when attempting to invest money either in their agriculture sector or any sector the IMF deems not good enough.
    African borders were drawn such that states are never big enough to be economically viable and the fact that they duplicate administrative and military resources means that they forever remain utterly dependent on those who drew its borders...
    Western and China's industries were seeded by respective governments in a fanatic push to become competitive with the rest of the world and push for self-reliance.
    Consider this, there are a lot of idle young men with brilliant minds in Africa.  Why do leaders fail to build the institution and culture of research and development and help seed industries.....rather than buying old generation military hardware and end up paying for their spare parts for decades to come.Imagine something like this?Kenya Anti-Aircraft Missiles Research Institute  (KAMRI) - Making breakthrough in missiles technology, building state of the art hardware and software, investing in super computers that allows Kenyan engineers to fully build & test these systems in a virtual universe before assembly??.. Systems that can take on the best fighter jets in the world and showcased at international airshows...and bought by wealthy countries...creating jobs and development...
    WHY DO OUR AFRICANS LEADERS LACK BIG DREAMS AND VISION?
    WE NEED LESS LEADERS LIKE MOBUTU (A THUG)  AND MORE MAU LIKE VISIONARIES...WHO PROPEL OUR CONTINENT TO SELF RELIANCE AND TO UPHOLD THE DIGNITY OF ITS PEOPLE.

    I take great exception with this award. How can Tom Mboya win this award for just one story. How about someone like Mohammed Ali now with NTV. The guy is the best investigative journalist Kenya has ever had. At this rate this award is just a token award done to pander to some western-centric ideas of depicting Africa.
