Here Are Photos Of Kenya’s Biggest Cake,..Weighs Like 5 Proboxes-5000KG (PHOTOS)

Kenya’s largest cake or lets say the biggest cake to ever be baked in the country was recently baked by Nairobi based Cake shop, Cake City. The cake which weighs 5000KG or as NairobiWire described it, (equivalent to the weight of five proboxes) was cut at Pride Inn Hotel in Westlands on Saturday evening to mark Cake City’s first anniversary. The piece of art took a total of 7 days to bake it and according to Cake City’s boss Shaheed Ali Khan, his first aim was to break the 1989 record set in Alabama, of the world’s largest birthday cake which weighed a whooping 58,000 kg.
“This is a major milestone for us and the country because no other outlet has done this in the region and my team is going to pull all the stops to break the world record soon,” He added. The pieces of the cake were distributed to several childrens’ home.

GOOD FOOD TO YOUR DOORSTEP- A CLICK AWAY!

#vinny’s kitchen

Having worked in Nairobi’s C.B.D; when lunchtime comes around; and you haven’t packed the lunch box with yesterday’s leftover (Thank God for warmers); the choices are more or less reduced to fairly expensive restaurant visits. Funny thing; a friend; especially a lady co-worker; will always want to tag along. That is where your gentleman strengths and capsules are put to the test.

For me and my boys; the option was a place called Grogoan; or “Grogoo” as we called it. This is an automobile repairing are outside the C.B.D; opposite the Globe Roundabout. Our visits here ensured we stacked a heaping pile of pilau and stew or chapatti with beans stew (chapoh-madondoo) from the popular Mam Ni-tilie (corner kiosk).

Well; years down the line and three of Nairobi’s gastronomic veterans Kiran Jethwa; Spencer Fondaumeiere and Esmeralda De Souza; have set out to meet that demand.
They have started the Good Food Company- a delivery only catering company that offers a varied menu with items ranging from KES 315-600.  Sadly both Esmeralda and Spencer have since left TGFC (the good food company).

If you are in the mood to try out the “Taste of the orients” from the menu; you won’t be disappointed with Thai Beef Wok with noodles. Perfectly cooked stir fried egg noodles mixed with beef in peanut oil are served with baby organic vegetables in a soy sauce fragranced with kaffir lime.
Or if you prefer the healthier choice; you can go with the broccoli sun dried tomatoes chickpea and turkey salad.
Everything is fresh and tasty; and even though the price is mid-range; the portions are big enough for a grown man to satisfy his appetite. Hail the Good Food Company.

PETE’S COFFE HOUSE AT I-HUB KENYA

RESTAURANT REVIEWS…

“…Hey, wait a minute, we have Pete’s Coffee House back in the states,” my Nigerian friend based in California USA; but who was I n Nairobi for a short visit comments.
Then one of the I-hub techies answers her with a classic; “this is not just an ordinary Pete’s Coffee house! This is by our very own renowned coffee barrister, Pete owino.”

There are three things that any techpreneur starting out needs- oh make that 4; internet, space, people and yes a good cup of coffee. And there is a place in Nairobi where entrepreneurs in tech are going to find them: Silicon Avenue. Akin to the Silicon Valley in the U.S; this is a place that many Kenyan tech start-ups have started to call home. This would be the 2.5KM stretch along Ngong’ Road, which is seeing a lot of tech companies, hubs and start-ups setting up base. Here, tech companies are finding internet, space and people, plus good coffee and meals, the perfects recipe for the creation of a new enterprise.
But the recipe is not just on the techies business development but also on the culinary gem at I-hub-Pete’s Coffee House.

Over the years, beers wars have grabbed most of the headlines, but what you don’t hear much about are the coffee wars. Who’s the best, really? Artcaffe, Java, Dormans, Pete’s coffee. Everybody has his or her opinion-and loyalties. And the true answer to that question is not for this blog (at least, not today).
But when it comes to roasting coffee- Pete’s Coffee House are the experts. But they just don’t deal with coffee but their refreshed and flavored menu will take you on a great culinary trip.
If you love hot or cold beverages; sandwiches or anything on the go, then they have got you covered. Try Pete’s Coffee House-it is a sure unique destination.

VINNY’S KITCHEN GOES SALADS! SALADS! SALADS!

BY EMBUKANE VINCENT LIBOSSO
V
inny’s Kitchen has always been fun with a foodie side. It is a greats segment where I let you into my kitchen and give you a taste of what I am feeling; great treats and just simple recipes you can try at home. It is basically food and fun!
But I came across a foodie like me who had a great piece on the Kenya Buzz (www.kenyabuzz.com) which I would love to share today. Oh, I should call her a “saladie” (not sure whether that’s an English word) because she is “mad” about salads.

WHY SALADS?

I honestly have no proper answer to this question. Still thinking about it. I am not sure if it’s because of boredom (eating other people’s salads), or just another discovered hobby. I never knitted as a child, only learnt it in my adulthood and still knit. I might just kind t you a sweater or make you a salad.

In January 2013; my new year’s resolution was to get into chocolate rehab and eat raw salad for lunch. Just like most people; I didn’t see myself surviving, without chocolate. I mean, who quits chocolate? Very unserious people. I did start with two weeks, then I did a month; I did 40 days and at this rate; I could do a year. Bring it on! By the way; I did have withdrawal symptoms (nothing dramatic like shaking and acting crazish). I see chocolate in the supermarket and I am proud to say that I ignore the voices. Those voices used to turn me into a zombie (true story) and somehow, I would end up buying a few bars. How, I have no idea!

Focus! Back to the real story. So I started to make salads for my lunch, and I just started basic, but with leaves that my stomach and mind said ok. Lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cheese just to begin with. I have discovered that I prefer my veggies raw (not fashion). I find cooked veggies or even steamed; boring. And I mean dead boring! Like seriously- BORING! Am sure you get my drift by now.

There is something about raw veggies that I can’t explain. They give you so much energy. Sometimes I wonder if ii am on coffee. I am never tired, I feel great, and I could run across the continent and back (no I will not deliver your mail). Let us just say I feel so alive and high on vegetables.

I’m not a vegetarian, but I love my fish and my skinned chicken. I just steam them and slap a salad together and there is the meal. But I can’t ignore the benefits that come with enjoying my vegetables.

What do you like to eat your salad with?

HELLO FOOD: EASY DELIVERY WITH JUST A TOUCH OF A BUTTON…

BY EMBUKANE VINCENT LIBOSSO
I
am an avid fan of apps and I came across the Hello Food App that is available on Android and the I-Phone phones.
The app allows you to view different restaurant’s menu directly on your palm. The website platform too allows you to view the menus in a fun and convenient way, as if you were actually seated in the restaurant; ready to make an order.
Hello Food is a new delivery service website in Kenya and one of Kenya’s fastest growing online business.

Their goal from the outset; has been to make ordering food: fun, fast and hassle free. So if you are a Nairobian wanting to get a head start on hunger by ordering on the move, or placing a sneaky lunchtime order during those long morning meetings, then Hello Food is food at your fingertips.
And not only that; you are able to order meals for yourself or if you have a function, for a large group of people.
And the deal gets even better! Hello Food has an impressive catalogue of Nairobi’s best restaurants and you can tailor your search based on your location and specific cravings.

Simply enter your area and search for cuisine type, restaurants or price range. The restaurant index also includes address and delivery hours.
An extra benefit; don’t you just love this already; is that you pay your food at delivery and with no-extra-charge; as if you were ordering at the restaurant.
Basically; with all of the fantastic meals in the city, now only a click away, I don’t think easy food delivery gets better that this.
Oh; hail the great HELLO FOOD!

NAIROBI’S BARBECUE LIVE FESTIVAL: WHERE MEAT LOVERS UNITE FOR A TASTY AFFAIR

By Embukane Vincent Libosso

O
ne thing with our blog is that we have always showcased the best of what Nairobi has to offer. But today, let’s talk about food and everything food. The Barbecue Festival (BBQ) is all about a tasty affair!

We love sharing meals and man we have got appetite! The BBQ is an annual affair and arguably one of Kenya’s leading food affair.
It is a meaty affair, featuring ready-to-eat tender beef, sweet-tasting lamb, greasy mutton, pork, chicken, goat, prawns, crabs, shrimps and lobsters among other available delicacies.

Here, basically the aim is to grill anything edible that you can think of. The director of the festival Sandra Mawira notes, “rules are simple: a ticket purchase is the only way to ‘eat till you drop’”

At times, the event throws in a “battle of the chefs”; where host chefs from leading restaurants in Nairobi, Mombasa and across Kenya battle it out.
They use their scrumptious meat specials in a battle to win over the guest’s taste buds; as well as the title of the Top Chef.

Cooked up from an idea in 2010; the festival has grown into a grand showcase of meaty cuisine, attracting thousands of foodies in Nairobi.

“Growing up, my mother held Saturday barbecues at her house. This brought all friends and family together, irrespective of any differences. That”, recalls Sandra “was mu inspiration to establish this festival. Who doesn’t love nyam chom?”

When you’ve had all you can eat, other special attractions and fun awaits you as your tummy settles peacefully.
